Demetrius Andrade Lashes Out at Canelo Alvarez for Fighting Weak Opponents: ‘That’s Not a Real Champion’

The WBO middleweight king, Demetrius Andrade, has fired wild shots at the pound-for-pound king, Canelo Alvarez. He accused Canelo of dodging him and stout contenders like him throughout the course of his boxing run. In an interview with Fight Hype, ‘Boo Boo’ shed some light on the Mexican boxer’s strategy to defend his belts and target easier or ‘softer’ opponents. Speaking about Alvarez’s upcoming fight with Avni Yildirim, he said, “He’s fighting next. He’s like oh that’s people like ‘that’s his mandatory!’ That’s like dude, you guys are making bad excuses for Canelo.” Andrade fumed over Alvarez’s idea of taking on substantially skilled opponents instead of genuine contenders. He even said that the Mexican boxer hasn’t fought two champions back-to-back. Furthermore, he claimed that Alvarez was only keen on protecting his legacy. But, the latter transitioned to distinct divisions, and the fight between the two could not take place. Saul Alvarez will defend his 168-pound belts on February 27 against Avni Yildirim. Post that, he’ll challenge Billy Joe Saunders for his WBO title. Given that he wants to become undisputed at super middleweight, it seems unlikely that he would fight Andrade unless ‘Boo Boo’ comes to 168.   Even if the American moves up, the chances of him getting a direct title shot against Alvarez are slim. Therefore, Andrade will look to continue his reign at the middleweight roster until things are in place to battle-out Canelo. But, it will still be intriguing to see if ‘Boo Boo’ takes it in his stride to compete against the unified super-middleweight champion. Do you agree with Demetrius Andrade’s statements?
