Essendon’s pre-season has been dealt a double injury blow with both Jake Stringer and Michael Hurley facing a race against time to be fit for the season opener.Hurley is being treated for a leg infection in hospital and has failed to train this week, while Stringer is battling with Achilles and calf pain.Stringer left Essendon’s training session on Thursday feeling his calf and was assessed by the team’s medical staff before undergoing scans after training.According to AFL.com.au, Stringer’s injury does not appear to be a “serious setback”.Young gun Harrison Jones could be called into action if Stringer and Hurley miss any extended time (Getty)Stringer, whose 2020 season was crippled by a syndesmosis injury, has been battling Achilles issues all pre-season and had only just joined Essendon’s full training group. The 26-year-old is expected to be vital to coach Ben Rutten’s forward line in 2021 after the off-season departures of Joe Daniher and Orazio Fantasia. While the injury is a blow, Stringer is expected to recover in time for Essendon’s Round 1 clash against Hawthorn on March 20.Hurley’s infection also comes at an inopportune time for the Bombers’ forward structures, with the veteran expected to play up forward this season. For a daily dose of the best of the breaking news and exclusive content from Wide World of Sports, subscribe to our newsletter by clicking here!
